Stressed About Losing Weight?….

Have you ever wondered why you put on weight just looking at a piece of Chocolate cake and yet your friend could eat the whole cake and not put on an ounce?

You have a glass of wine at a party and you weigh a kilo heavier in the morning?

Or you meticulously weight everything you eat, no bread, no potatoes, everything is healthy, but you gain weight rather than lose it?

There is a reason.  And it’s not your age, menopause, although those can certainly affect your results.  It is Stress and anxiety that are the real culprits!

Scientific research has shown 75% of the cause of weight gain and the inability to control weight is directly related to stress and having the release of cortisol continuously into our system.

For most of us, stress is a fact of life. However, Scientific research reveals that it’s also a fact of fat. “Even if you usually eat well and exercise, chronic high stress can prevent you from losing weight—or even add kilo’s,” says Pamela Peeke, MD, author of Body for Life for Women.

Add to the normal “stress of day to day living”, the accumulated stress of past emotional events that have not been successfully processed by your “mind” (events not processed into memories and stored) and a person can be walking through life with consistently elevated levels of cortisol.  Now the body thinks it needs extra fuel, creates cravings and typically stores the fat created by overeating into “fat around the stomach” known as “the spare tire.”

So, why are some past events not processed?  The reality is we don’t know.

Fear and stress equals fat

Fear and stress equals fat

The process of creating a memory starts with the thalamus regulating the focused attention which a memorable event has caused thereby triggering neurons to fire more frequently, making the experience more intense and increasing the likelihood that the event will be encoded by the amygdala.   However, emotions tend to increase attention and often this process “stalls” especially when an event is particularly harrowing, frightening or life threatening.  In these instances, the emotions narrow and increase the attention focus, associates the event to the person and “locks” the person into Fight, Flight, Freeze.  This prevents the event from processing into a memory and the person will stay hyper vigilant, with constant elevated levels of cortisol.

The result is often an expanded waistline, or can present as other “addictive” behaviours such as smoking, drinking, gambling or even becoming a “gym junkie”!

The science behind Stress and Weight Gain is very interesting. Generally, when we feel start to feel hungry, our blood sugar drops and our brain sends a signal to the adrenal glands to release cortisol. Cortisol activates glucose, fats and amino acids to keep our body fuelled with energy until we eat. The job of cortisol is to maintain blood sugar levels, and the job of insulin to help our cells absorb glucose. When we experience constant long term stress, insulin and cortisol remain elevated in the blood, and the extra glucose is stored as fat – mostly gathered around the abdomen.

What scientists have now discovered is that fat cells have special receptors for the stress hormone cortisol, more of these receptors are found in our abdominal fat cells than anywhere else in our bodies! Additionally, scientists have proven that belly fat is actually an active tissue, acting as an endocrine organ that responds to the stress response by actually attracting, in fact welcoming more fat to be deposited! This is an ongoing cycle until we take steps to correct this adrenal imbalance. How do we do that?
